Andrew McLuhan carries on the work of his grandfather, Marshall McLuhan. Mark “Moose” McGrath and I asked him how Marshall’s idea of media as extensions of man fits with John Boyd’s OODA sketch.
Two thinkers together
Boyd and McLuhan complement each other. Boyd put orientation at the center of how we observe, decide and act. McLuhan showed how media reshape the environment we orient in. Together they say a lot about cognition and how ideas get applied.
The smartphone
We spend time on the smartphone. It has become part of the structure of modern life and shapes how society works. We imagine what would happen if every phone vanished overnight. For most people, it has become as essential as electricity.
The medium matters
Andrew explains McLuhan’s point that the medium shapes us more than any message it carries. We talk about what that means for the environment and for technology. Culture and technology move together, and media shape human experience at a deep level.
What medium shapes your orientation more than you would like?
