Mark “Slider” Keller and I traveled to New Bern, North Carolina, to sit down with Dr. Patrick Porter of BrainTap. We wanted to understand how his device uses light and sound to shift brainwave states.
Light, sound and brainwaves
Patrick explains how BrainTap pairs sound in each ear with lights choreographed to the music. The aim is to guide the brain toward relaxed states such as alpha and theta. He links those states to sleep, anxiety and focus.
Breath and emotion
Patrick says emotion drives behavior, and that breathing through a hard moment changes how we respond. We also talk about how BrainTap might support preparation and integration around psychedelic-assisted therapy.
Perspective
Patrick shares stories from athletes and professionals who use BrainTap. His larger point is about the limits we believe we have.
For me, the question is how our state shapes orientation. A calmer brain takes in more of what is in front of it.
This episode is not medical advice.
What changes in your decisions when you slow your breathing first?
