Mark Squeglia has lived in Erie, Pennsylvania, all his life, and he appears in the PBS Chronicles episode on John Boyd and the OODA loop. Mark “Moose” McGrath and I asked him about Boyd’s roots in Erie.
Erie and Strong Vincent
Mark Squeglia walks us through Boyd’s upbringing and the people and places that shaped his strategic mind. Strong Vincent High School sits at the center of that story.
The 1992 speech
In 1992 Boyd gave the commencement address at his old high school. Mark Squeglia recounts what Boyd told the graduates about learning, adapting and pulling ideas from different fields together into something new. Boyd used his snowmobile example from Destruction and Creation to make that point.
From tactics to business
We also cover Boyd’s contributions to military tactics and how his thinking reaches into business and complex systems.
Hearing about Boyd’s hometown from someone who knows it shows a side of him we rarely see.
What would you tell a graduating class about learning to adapt?
