The Portland Fire built their first WNBA season around the constraints-led approach, and their head coach, Alex Sarama, was the league’s Coach of the Month for May. George Vaz helped write the book behind that approach.
George is a coach, clinician and writer with Transforming Basketball. He is a co-author, with Alex Sarama and others, of A Constraints-Led Approach to Coaching Basketball. George says the constraints-led approach (CLA) is old. The research has lived in ecological dynamics for decades. Complicated academic terminology kept it off the court, so his team translated ideas like perception-action coupling into basketball language players can use. Coaches set the why and the what, and the players find the how.
I map that onto John Boyd’s real OODA loop, mission command and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s flow channel. In Boyd’s sketch, orientation sits at the center and shapes what a player perceives. The CLA works on orientation by changing the environment a player has to read.
Harder than the game
George argues that training should be harder than the game. Rate limiters, small-sided games and a 70/30 challenge point keep skilled players and new players learning in the same session. The Fire’s shot spectrum sorts shots into gold, silver and bronze. Their dominoes principles carry names like zero-second decisions, one can’t guard two, and floor is lava. George also describes individual roles such as targets, pickers and converters. He explains why set plays can give away an advantage that a conceptual offense keeps.
Develop or collect
George compares European player development with the American system and points to the shot clock, the ratio of practice to games, and coach education. He expects true cross-domain experts to matter more than certifications in the next few years. He closes with a choice between two coaches. Coach A develops players. Coach B buys them. Along the way he describes tag up, a game that takes away an affordance, which is an option the environment offers a player.
