Matthew “Whiz” Buckley, Gareth Lock and I have all carried lessons from aviation into business. In this conversation we ask what that habit gets wrong, and what it gets right.
Bounded lessons
Lessons from the cockpit come from a bounded world. Applied as gospel in a complex business, they can mislead. We question the execution gap, the Swiss cheese model in complex settings, and the overuse of checklists.
The debrief
Whiz tells the story of a Blue Angels pilot who called out a small error of his own in the debrief. Almost nobody in the crowd could have seen it. That habit of naming your own mistakes starts with leaders, and it makes honest feedback possible.
Trading and teams
Whiz explains how he took debriefing to a trading firm, and why his trade plan sets the exit before he enters a trade. Gareth adds the human factors view from his work with divers. We also touch on cognitive diversity, crew resource management and psychedelics in personal growth.
Gareth first joined me in Episode 57. This time the three of us turned the questions on our own community.
Which cockpit lesson has your organization taken too far?
